Leaving a campsite clean is easier when the whole group plans to create less rubbish in the first place.

Looking Beneath the Surface

Reusable supplies, clearly labeled collection points and a carry-out plan reduce accidental litter. Small changes can also simplify cleanup for volunteers.

The dream of doing things yourself should not erase regulations, ecological care or professional expertise. Good planning asks about cost, maintenance and safety before deciding whether the project is worth doing.

Cost is only one part of a project. Consider maintenance, storage, replacement parts, time and what happens when the plan fails. A useful system is one you can safely care for after the excitement of building it wears off.

A Small Experiment

Challenge friends to plan one gathering with refillable bottles, durable dishes and a designated recycling or trash lead. Photograph the site before arrival and after departure to compare conditions.

Give yourself permission to modify the activity. A practice that fits a real life, with all its demands and interruptions, is more valuable than a perfect method that never gets used.

What to Keep in Mind

Recycling options vary by location; do not assume every material will be accepted. Pack out whatever the local system cannot handle.
